Program Objectives

• To establish a regionally well-known BSc and later postgraduate programs in aquatic resources development that attracts both Vietnamese and international students.
• To develop three research programs on (i) effects of global climate changes on aquatic resources and environment in Vietnam and adjacent areas, (ii) conservation and restoration of valuable aquatic bio-resources and (iii) advanced aquaculture technologies in order to support the ARD academic program and assist local industries.
• To establish an English-written scientific journal in aquatic resources development for Vietnam and maintain quality publication that helps exchange information and technologies with the rest of the world.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Fishery Management have found opportunities in a number of fields, including aquaculture industry, local and regional government agencies, and research institutions in Vietnam and overseas. Many of our graduates work as consultants, researchers and executives in international corporations such as Virbac, Skretting, Viet Uc Seafood Corporation, among others. Others have continued on to post-graduate careers in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Australia, among others.

All students must take the internship in the junior years after completing at least 90 credits of general and major courses at the University. The internship course is critical for students to apply their knowledge and skills learned from the University in the practical production. The student has to work at manufacturing factories or research institutes providing organizations for a period of 2 months, equivalent to 8 weeks or 160 hrs. At the beginning of the internship experience, a clear position description released by the organization is related to study fields, educational goals and career aspiration of the students. The internship must be approved and supervised by both the faculty instructor and a professional or expertise of the organization called onsite supervisor, as it is the extension and applying knowledge gained in the classroom to the fields of career. An internship presentation is required when students return to the University. Students share their learning experience; give recommendation to the organization and also themselves; indicate how their competencies have been improved and enhanced by the internship.

At the conclusion of the internship program, a student’s performance is evaluated by both on-site supervisors and IU advisors. In addition, he/she has to present what tasks he/she completed throughout the program and whether those have helped him/her fulfill his/her objectives.

Through the internship, potential employers would have a chance to assess IU students for full-time employment upon graduation. Moreover, employers would have a chance to recommend possible adjustments IU’s curriculum in order to best prepare students for future job market.

The thesis project is the integral and essential component of the Aquatic Resource Management program. It accounts for 12 credits in a student’s curriculum. It enables students to identify their own area of interest, familiarize themselves with practical scientific experience, practice project management, consolidate their oral and written communication skills.

To register for a thesis project, a student must have accumulated at least 110 credits from other coursework and been accepted by an advisor from IU and/or established institutes.

There are two steps in the thesis process. Firstly, the thesis proposal is presented to a committee of IU faculty members, appraised and revised upon the committee’s feedback. Secondly, the student carries out the proposed project under the supervision of his/her advisor from IU and/or established institutes. Their progress is periodically evaluated, and procedures revised accordingly.

Upon completion, the student must submit a comprehensive thesis report, presenting the outcomes of what he/she has accomplished, and present his/her findings to a committee of IU faculty members.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Fishery Management, a student must have successfully accumulated 139 credits from his/her coursework and obtained English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5. That includes all taught classes as well as internship and thesis projects. Upon graduation, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate decision making ability to solve potential and on-going issues in aquatic resource management
• Create and develop feeds, breeds, medicines, quality control procedures, culturing procedures, among others, that are applicable to aquaculture in Viet Nam
• Safely and correctly operate technical equipment in environmental impact assessment, water quality control, molecular analysis as well as advanced scientific computer software.
• Develop critical thinking and teamwork ability that are suitable to international working environment
